Yes, online sports betting is legal if you’re a New Zealand resident. However, there are a few things that you should know and consider before engaging in online sports betting.
Legal Gambling in New Zealand
The Gambling Act 2003 allows online sports betting with TAB NZ, the only New Zealand-based sportsbook. However, as the Gambling Act targets brands and not players, those wanting to participate in online sports betting are able to do so with operators based abroad.
As Kiwis are allowed to use any international online gambling site, there are options:
- Pinnacle if you’re a fan of esport (read our Pinnacle review to learn more).
- William Hill if you want to bet but also play casino games (read our William Hill casino review).
New Zealand residents should not fear legal ramifications from their participation in online gambling, whether they decide to bet with a company based in New Zealand or abroad.
But for your own protection, double-check your online gambling provider to see if they have a license – be they based overseas or in New Zealand.
