2023 Women’s World Cup format: 32 teams & eight groups
The format of the 2023 Women’s World Cup has been expanded 32 teams since its last iteration in 2019, and will be the first women’s tournament to be held over two host nations. This change in format for the sixth edition of the Women’s World Cup will see 32 teams divided into eight groups of four, with each side playing three matches in the group stage of the tournament. This consequently means there will be six fixtures for each group.
The top two teams of each group will then advance to the round of 16, also known as the elimination stage of the tournament. From here knockout football will reign supreme : the winners progress each round to the quarter final, the semi final, and then the climatic final of the competition. This all-deciding fixture will be played on Sunday 20th August 2023 at 10pm.
Group Stage: 20th July – 3rd August
Round of 16: 5th – 8th August
Quarter Final: 11th – 12th August
Semi Final: 15th & 16th August
Third-place play-off: 19th August
Final: 20th August
2023 Women’s World Cup full schedule
Among the teams participating in the tournament, powerhouse nations such as England, Spain, and Germany will be joined by Portugal, Haiti, and Panama. These three teams earned their spot in the tournament through their impressive performances in the Play-offs. As the co-hosts, Australia and New Zealand will kick off the tournament on 20 July, with Australia facing the Republic of Ireland and New Zealand taking on Norway.
However, the team to beat in this edition of the World Cup is the United States. The reigning champions are looking to etch their name in history by becoming the first-ever nation, in either the women’s or men’s game, to win three consecutive FIFA World Cup titles. The USA has been a dominant force in women’s football, and their quest for a historic third title will undoubtedly add an extra layer of excitement to the tournament.
