What’s next for Toronto FC in 2022?

What’s next for Toronto FC in 2022

After a successful campaign for the Canadian Championship and international break, Toronto FC is now ready to carry the momentum into the rest of the year. The question is, what lies ahead in the coming months?

Before we take a look at the team’s upcoming schedule lets take a look at what they’ve done in the past couple months. Toronto FC’s last outing saw them take home their eighth Voyageurs Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Forge FC. Before that, the team had only put up four points in their last MLS games. This included a 2-1 victory over HFX Wanderers in the 2022 Canadian Championship quarter-finals.

Toronto FC has now gone a couple weeks without any competitive action. This could either prove to be beneficial for the players, giving them some much needed rest or end up as a breaking point in the year. Either way we expect the players to be looking to have a go come the last weeks of June.

At the moment, the Reds occupy 12th spot in the Eastern Conference with 15 points from 14 games. The standings are relatively close however, with the team only 4 points off seventh and sixth, held by FC Cincinnati and Charlotte FC respectively. Toronto FC also have a game in hand over Charlotte FC which could be the difference come the end of the season. The two sides will be facing off at BMO Field on the 23rd of July.

Based on the team’s current position, the playoffs are very much on the cards if the team can get their act together. It’s only the halfway point for the 2022 MLS season and consistency will be the key to a playoff berth this season. Expect the teams that pull together a string of good performances to make it through from both conferences.

In the immediate future, of Toronto’s four remaining matches in June, three of them are in Major League Soccer. First, the team will have to travel to Harrison, New Jersey and play the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, June 18th. Then on Wednesday, June 22nd, Toronto FC will be coming back home to take on CF Montreal at BMO Field for the first time in 2022. The battle between the two Canadian rivals is a much anticipated game and should garner a lot of attention. If they can grab a couple wins, the Reds will have their eyes on lifting the Voyageurs Cup twice in the same calendar year.

The next couple months will be big towards telling what kind of season is ahead for Toronto FC. This could either be one of their most successful years ever or things could go sideways for a more modest season.
