Heading into the business end of the tournament, many of the familiar faces you’d expect to see have already been eliminated. In the Men’s bracket, both Rafael Nadal and defending champion Daniil Medvedev were taken out in the Fourth Round by Frances Tiafoe and Nick Kyrgios respectively, leaving the tournament without its top two seeds. The highest seed left on the Men’s side at the US Open is now the 19 year old Spaniard, Carlos Alcaraz.
The Women’s draw has been less surprising with the top seed Iga Swiatek from Poland leading the way into the Quarter Finals. The big upset came in the Third Round of the tourney, when Serena WIlliam was eliminated by Ajla Tomljanovic. The winningest player in tennis history was looking for her record 24th Grand Slam title but will have to wait until next year to get her next chance.
With most of the big names gone from the tournament, we will likely see some new faces in the Finals this year. The question is however, which players left in the tournament have the best shot at taking the title down?
US Open Favourites
On the Men’s Singles side, Nick Kyrgios, Marin Cilic and Carlos Alcatraz are considered the favourites to win the title. The Women’s Singles bracket has No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek and fifth seed Ons Jabeur leading the way.
Men’s Singles- Nick Kyrios
27-year old Australian tennis pro, Nick Kyrios, has been in the mix at the back end of Grand Slams for a few years now. The best result he’s been able to achieve so far is a Finals appearance at Wimbledon this year. He has now already made it the furthest in his career for the US Open by making it into the Quarters.
While only ranked 23rd, Kyrios has been on a tear lately, are this year’s Wimbledon finalist and Citi Open champion. After beating No. 1 seed Daniil Medvedev in the Fourth Round of the Open there is no doubt that Kyrios’s confidence will be at an all-time high. Next up will be Russian Karen Khachanov in the Quarters, who Kyrios will be a big favourite against.
Women’s Singles- Iga Swiatek
Polish tennis star, Iga Swaitek entered the US Open as the top seed in the Women’s draft and has shown everyone why, with dominant victories up to this point in which she has not dropped a single set. The 21-year old won the French Open this year and made it all the way to the Semis in the Australian Open.
In terms of competition, Swaitek will be looking mainly at Ajla Tomljanovic and Ons Jabeur who are on the other side of the bracket.
