theScore Bet recently announced that it would be discontinuing its online sports betting operations in the United States. The top media brand will stop providing sports betting to Americans starting Friday, July 1, 2022. The sportsbook is currently operational in four U.S. markets – New Jersey, Colorado, Indiana, and Iowaas well as Ontario, Canada. Ahead of stoppage in operations, theScore Bet will no longer be accepting deposits from American-based bettors starting from Wednesday, June 15.
The main reason for theScore Bet leaving America is the focus to shift to its sister betting site Barstool. Last August, Penn National Gaming acquired theScore, making it the second sports betting operator under its wing after Barstool Sportsbook. Barstool will still hold service in the US in 12 states – including Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, and New Jersey. We expect Barstool to be pushed hard into the American market to take the space that theScore Bet once had.
The exit from America is also rumoured to be due to theScore Bet’s incredible success in the Canadian market. The brand is said to have cornered over 50% of the sports betting market in Ontario and is on pace to increase its share in the coming months. Revenue figures have not yet been released but it is expected that theScore will be at the top of the list.
What’s Next For theScore Bet in Ontario?
In early April, the Toronto Blue Jays announced a 10-year deal with theScore Bet that includes plans for a branded sports bar within the Rogers Centre. This project is expected to get underway in the coming months.
Penn National Gaming has also made it clear that they are looking to make big integrations within their sports betting companies. Barstool Sportsbook will reportedly transition to theScore’s player account management (PAM) and trading platforms by the third quarter of 2023. This will likely greatly increase the player run through for the sportsbook and generate even more revenue.
theScore has also announced plans to improve their top mobile app (read more about TheScore mobile app) even more by linking it to the Media App. Bettors will be able to seamlessly get highlights, news, scores and other content while betting from anywhere within Ontario.
Conclusion
theScore Bet has already made a lasting impression on the Ontario sports betting market, which is unexpected considering the other huge players. The top three sports betting operators in the United States – DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM – control at least 70% of the overall market. However in Canada, theScore Bet (read our review about TheScore Bet) has been able to beat the odds and become the leading sportsbook for the time being.
